This interview is Myra Goldick asking Deborah about what inspired her desire to create “Survivors Pay it Forward”  and specifically focusing on the birth of HigherVision in 1991.

Deborah knows what it’s like to be hit with seemingly insurmountable challenges. In 1997 her world as she knew it came to an end when she suffered a traumatic brain injury and disabilities in a car accident. Her road to recovery was long and lonely and one day at the crossroads of wanting to live or die she had an awakening that moved her from being a victim to a survivor and put her on a pathway to purpose, a mission to “Pay it Forward.” Deborah is a visionary who believes that when extraordinary people come together to share courage and inspiration with others, all of society benefits and an awakening begins. Yes it is a Ripple Effect

I would like to introduce you to Carly Thorne a like minded woman on a mission. Her mission may look just like our goal, her mission in many ways resembles the “Survivors Pay it Forward, Survive to Thrive – Voices of Victory Mission” however  kindness and the message of being kind is not new, it has been around since the dawn of time. Like many inspirational and spiritual leaders from the past, a modern new wave of kindred souls are taking a positive action, and igniting a deep and heartfelt message around the globe. This message is more than the message of “kindness” this movement  is about collaboration, unity and support. This synchronicity is like little raindrops of water sprinkling all over our world quenching the thirst of a long draught. Get ready for a “Global Cleanse.”

Now when it comes to coincidences, two or more situations occurring at the same time – I am never surprised. My whole life in one way or another presents to me the little sign posts of synchronicity. While I was launching “Survivors Pay it Forward, The Survive to Thrive Mission,” Carly Alyssa Thorne was launching her project right under our nose, here in Las Vegas. Carly is creating awareness thru a documentary – Interviewing kids all over, going into the schools, creating a book series of PIF stories written by children. Instantly when she introduced herself to me I couldn’t help but to see our connection, a relationship I wanted to nurture. I invite my friends, Survivors who pay it forward,  our TBI family and associate networks to come with us… we are all in this together. Welcome Carly to The HigherVision Family!

Deborah Berry founder of “Survivors Pay it Forward” from Las Vegas and Annie Ricketts from Great Britain, founder of “The BI Global Picnic,” met on Facebook and unite to break the current Guinness World Record.

The world is a lonely place when you are living with a “Brain Injury,” but not anymore. There is a group of survivors, health care providers, care givers and advocates who live with a Brain Injury that are coming together from around the world to bring awareness to “The Silent Epidemic” that effects more than 2 million people per year. (One person every fifteen minutes.) Every five minutes someone dies from a head injury and every five minutes someone becomes permanently disabled. There is a large number of a head trauma victims that are unaware of having a brain injury, which can go undetected for months and sometimes years. Deborah is one of those people who suffered a brain injury that went undetected for four years. Her story is like many unfortunate people that live with disabilities sustained from a car accident, shaking baby syndrome, sports injury, a near drowning, a life-threatening illness, a stroke and excessive impact from an explosion in military combat. As an advocate, Deborah’s passion as an inspirational speaker and educator is to bring survivors together and end the silence through “The BI Global Picnic.”

About the Picnic: On June 30th Brain Injury advocates and supporters around the world are holding picnics in attempt is to break the current Guinness World Record of 22,232, picnickers in a 24-hour period. Deborah is a brain injury survivor and a two-time survivor of disease that affects the brain. If that’s not enough to endure, in 1986 her two-year-old son Lee drowned and was brought back to life by paramedics. Deborah is also an advocate for swimming pool and water safety. She says, “No one should ever have to see what I witnessed. After several hours of surgery to release the pressure from his brain, I witnessed my son on a gurney wrapped up in silver foil with a bolt screwed into the back of his head. It’s the most horrific sight you could ever imagine. After 20 days Lee was taken off the machines that kept him alive. Lee died March 20^th 1986. Thousands of children each year suffer with brain injury after a near death drowning. Some of us are lucky to discover a new way of life and prevail after the trauma and tragedy of a brain injury. We have to come together in support of each other and bridge the gap between medicine, holistic healing and social awareness.”

The World Health Organization recently estimated that there are one billion people on this planet living with some kind of neurological disorder; the statistics are extremely high and growing every year. This is one of the reasons why brain injury is known as ‘The Silent Epidemic.” Brain injury can be obvious – a gash in the head, physical disability or a dozen other noticeable symptoms. It can also be less obvious this is why it is called ‘The Hidden Disability.” People with brain injuries are commonly misjudged as having a mental illness, psychological, behavioral or personality problems. They can also present themselves as highly functional for short periods of time. A TBI is associated with many disabilities and Post Traumatic Stress disorders that can be triggered by unpredictable circumstances. There are many misconceptions about brain injury, and this is what we are trying to change – the world needs an update!

Deborah’s life challenges span over ½ a century, her life story seems unbelievable and her message powerful. When hope wasn’t enough I searched to find more. I wanted to do more than just wish there was a better life for me – I wanted to experience it.

I had no idea why as a little girl the humble stories of compassion brought me to tears. I secretly held Jesus as my mentor and listened to his stories of compassion and kindness. It was upsetting for me to see how the world was and how cruel people were to one another. I was always in trouble at school fighting the battle against bullies, standing up for the injustice happening and judged for every step I took. At a young age I rescued other children in times of crisis and as a teen I built trust with badly treated horse and trained them for equestrian. 1986, at 23 my life stopped after the tragic death of my son. For ten years the sound of sirens triggered post trauma episodes of fear and grief. Five years later my mother told me I was put in an orphanage when I was two years old. This explained the hidden trauma and feelings of abandonment I carried around for 28 years. In 1997, I was in a car accident, which left me with brain in jury and disabilities. Again my life stopped.

Being Kind to Myself

I found my way back to a sense of love and peace through my search for someone to be kind to me but I came to realize this kindness started with myself; being kind to me first. A whole journey began as I learned to understand what my life was telling me through the endless pain and suffering I had endured. My time line is set over five decades, in three continents, three marriages over half a century. Each span of a ten-year period held a secret key to life and a trauma or tragedy of some horrific magnitude. On the flip side of the coin the adventures of my life have taken me from a small village in Brighton England all the way down under to Australia and around the world again to the bright lights of Las Vegas in America. As sad as my life appears to be it was designed for me to travel on and to discover my greatest passion and purpose. Life is a blessing and taught me a lot. I have learned the finer skills of a horse whisperer, mustered cattle and sheep and trained racehorse in the outback of Australia.  I have travelled the world as an entertainment publicist, producer and manager. I have enjoyed motherhood, indulged in cooking and gardening, writing and painting, singing and healing with energy.

I am blessed. Kindness found me and in time I found it to be one of my greatest secrets. One of life’s greatest gifts. It is so simple and often over looked by many people. Life is simple. You  have the option to read about life  in a book and only understand it in your mind or live and learn about it on every level, mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. But to live it and understand it in heart and mind can be like climbing a mountain in a snow storm. Walking it every step of the way is not so easy when life knocks you down every time you get back up. Life can be cruel and unrelenting but when you discover how to not fight back and have courage and kindness as your own best friend, conquering fear and accepting the change, happens. I had started out being a victim of life circumstance and with much patience and a deep belief  I started to survive and eventually thrive. Kindness led me to understand a secret ingredient, on how to love myself. Love starts to grow within you. Love is not an acquired object or addition you gain from outside of yourself. Love starts to grow like a small seed that you feed over time. Once I discovered the secrets to my own happiness the abundance of love’s grace blessed me with what I had searched for my whole life.

After the car accident, in 1998 I wanted to end my own life. I had an awakening, God told me to write a book, ten days later a professor from Bond University, who happened to be my physiologist asked me to write a book with him. This affirmed by conversation with God, and I began to see my worth and value. My life was not over it had only just begun. I had to learn to live life in a new way and on that journey I discovered a process to self-empowerment and life mastery.

In 2005, I spoke in front of a group of TBI survivors. My mission had begun. The tears welled up in all of our eyes, as I shared the grace and gift that was hidden in our pain and trauma. Our story of survival had a profound and powerful message. In 2008, three years later I created “The Key to Life,” process and went into producing the movie outline. In 2010, I finished my book, “Empower Your Life, Secrets from a Life Coach.”

In 2011 I started Highervision Radio and “Tea with kindred Souls,” and founded Survivor’s Pay it Forward in 2012. Each milestone in my healing and transformation was inspired by a specific event, through either a vision, dream or from an out of a body experiences. I was guided and shown a specific path. My son Lee inspired the radio show “Tea with Kindred Souls,” this story is how Lee stayed in contact with me after he died. Twenty years after his death I discovered through a third party he was an angel watching over me. This is a beautiful story that affirms that life lives on .. on the other side of the dark the angels are there.

Mother’s Day comes but once a year however your job, love and duty is every waking hour and many sleepless nights. The moments sometimes go slow especially beside a sick baby, an ill child and screaming tantrums. We work a lot, cry a lot and just get on with our business. Some of us adopt, have a C Section, give birth the natural way and others nearly die in agony trying to spit it out. But never the less through all the puke and poop you smile from ear to ear when you see your little joy laugh for the first time. You watch every step and in hope, expectation and mere bliss anticipate every milestone. The joys of motherhood are what you do. You are a nurturer, like it or not, good or bad! You are the seed of Mother earth sowing her crops to bring forth the fruit of life.

Motherhood begins and ends when it does… time is precious, a gift! One wrapped up in a parcel of moments designed especially for you.

It’s Mother’s Day, some of us… maybe you are enjoying family and your kids. For some of us sadly our Mother’s died or just simply slipped away in time, with distance, disagreement or in abandonment? No matter who or what you do or experience this message is for you.

You have your story … Do you experience endless joy with your Mom, as a Mom, Grandmother or child enjoying both sides and the love and womanhood?

Are you like me… with too many sad moments to count? The reasons why are not really important at this time, so what really matters?

Regrets don’t help and tears make your eyes puff up. Food makes you Fat… LOL and being alone leaves you feeling barren, empty and feeling worthless. What do you do on days like this when your joy and expectation is not perfect? It feels like a box of melted chocolates…

It’s simple!

Time …. Enjoy every moment!

The mille moments of grief make us grumpy and joy is lost under all the mistakes we made or didn’t make. Be it if you are guilty of being a lousy mother or an absent one. Guilt or regret, wishing and hoping changes nothing. Something’s can be fixed but life is not a plumbing problem, an electrical malfunction or a computer hard drive you can through away and buy a new one.

Let your hurt have a voice, listen to the cry of your pain she has a message of wisdom. Become your own best friend, meditate, pray or simply be still in the moment.  Give yourself a little touch of kindness. Life is a season in baring fruit. Plant a seed, nurture your life, have compassion for you, spend time in natural, be creative and rejoice with friends who care. Life is like a box of melted chocolates, sometimes messy.

My Mother’s Day Message is,

 “Time”

Enjoy every moment! “Moments sometimes go slow but years fly by like seconds.” Your life is a gift.. Open her up. Dance, sing and play like the child you are. For you are an off spring of mother earth, God’s child and blessing filled with magic gold and light shining bright like a star.
